I want to share one of the non-negotiables in my armoury of how I stay gloriously well. It's all part of balancing this crazy kick-arse life with some self-care. Yep I know that whole 'self-care' thing can fall to the bottom of an already full to-do list. But hear me out. If you don't take time to rest + restore then you're waaaaaay more likely to get ill or run out of brain juice and momentum cos you're just too bloody tired. And my job's to bring more amazing energy and brilliant brain power to your life so that you go and do the amazing things you're meant to.
Let me introduce Alison Arden who's my acupuncturist. I see her once a month to balance out some of my kinks: low blood iron, sometimes sluggish digestion and feeling battered from doing too much. Yep I'm human and don't always have a total handle on this self-care thing. Still learning.
An hour with Ali and I feel energised, balanced and a whole lot better. I asked her to share some of the ways she stays gloriously well.
Hello Ali. How are you feeling today?
I'm feeling very good thank you. I have a mixed day of different activities and clients ahead and I'm looking forward to it.
You’re amazingly talented. Tell us how you help high-flyers to feel gloriously well.
I see my role as acupuncturist as part of a team of people that can impact a client's ability to feel great - and that includes the client themselves. Through acupuncture, I can help boost energy, improve poor sleep patterns, smooth out menstrual problems, relieve stress and anxiety as well as deal with ill-health. I see many high-flyers who are feeling overwhelmed with work and life, and it affects their sleep. I think most of us have had that issue at some point right?! Acupuncture is very effective at inducing calm and addressing those modern-life health issues. I have some regular clients that fall asleep during a treatment which I love! With all health problems, however, lifestyle changes that the client can make such as having good nutrition and getting some exercise impacts the benefit of acupuncture.
What drives you crazy?
Interesting question! I'm driven less crazy since starting meditation, I'm more chilled. However, bad manners and men spitting in the road can annoy me.....
What do you love?
I'm a glass half-full kind of person, so I love being social with lots of positive people around me. I love running and I've got a half marathon coming up, raising money for The Alzheimer's Society. I'm also a nature lover and am very content in the outdoors, walking in the woods near me or even better, along the coast. The sea is awesome. Oh and you can't beat being with friends and family with plenty of good food and drink - roll on summer BBQs.
Tell us three things we can all do to uplift our energy and to glow with good health.
We can do numerous small things that will impact our energy and help us glow with health. I always advise making just one or two changes at a time until they're a habit and then try another.
Here's my top 3.
1. Be aware of how sugar or caffeine can impact your energy during the day. You can avoid the 3pm office slump if you eat the right things - see Rebecca for advice! And sugar takes away our glow. It actually damages skin cells.
2. Do some exercise. Yes, it sounds counter-intuitive but it does give us more energy. Certain yoga poses such as Downward Dog really help. Gentle running in the morning sets you up for the day and my skin always looks great after a run. Do what you enjoy, whether it's a swim or whatever. And finally, exercise can help you sleep better, so win-win.
3. Drink plenty of water. Great for helping us glow - even better with lemon in it - and it helps our energy levels by avoiding dehydration which can masquerade as low energy.
